The lipophilic extract of the Saw Palmetto (serenoa repens) berries is the most widely used herbal preventive and therapeutic agent for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Clinical tests conducted during the last 10 years have boosted Saw Palmetto (serenoa repens) preparations to first place among all the herbal prostatic drugs ahead of stinging nettle root (Urtica dioica) African prune (Pygeum africanum, and pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo).
Clinical Studies
Saw Palmetto (serenoa repens) extract has emerged as a popular treatment in Europe, Canada, and in the U.S. for men suffering from an enlarged prostate. Its popularity as the treatment of choice is based on the plant's effectiveness and its lack of side effects. Indeed, the efficacy of Saw Palmetto extract in treating BPH has been proven in several clinical studies conducted with more than 800 patients. Saw Palmetto extract reduces subjective micturition symptoms, improves urinary outflow, and reduces volume of residual urine.
Most men achieve some relief of symptoms within the first 30 days after starting to take Saw Palmetto. In more than 20 controlled double-blind studies it was demonstrated that the lipidic extract of the berries standardized to contain 85-95% fatty acids and sterols is effective in relieving all the major symptoms of BPH, including increased nightime urinary frequency, which is the most bothersome complaint that sufferers report.
One controlled double-blind study on 100 BPH patients showed a decrease in night-time urinary volume by 42%. At the same time, the urinary outflow rate increased by more than 50% in the group taking the Saw Palmetto extract. No changes occurred in the blood parameters. Even long-term therapy showed therapeutic success and good tolerance of Saw Palmetto.
Other drug monitoring trials have confirmed the positive results of the clinical trials on Saw Palmetto. For example, 1,334 BPH patients was treated with Saw Palmetto extract for 12 weeks. Their residual urine volume decreased by 50% and their overall urination and nocturnal urination frequency decreased by 37% and 54%, respectively. The quota of patients complaining of difficulty and pain in urination decreased from 75% to 37%. More than 80% of the patients estimated the tolerance and efficacy as good. This three year propective, multi-centric study on a Saw Palmetto extract has lead to an improvement of the quality of life due to the sucess of the therapy. Saw Palmetto extract is notable for its particularly high level of clinical safety. Particular emphasis should be put on the good tolerance of Saw Palmetto preparations leading to a high treatment compliance, because of the almost total absence of side-effects. Only gastric complaints may occur in exceptional cases.
